Restoration diary: a photo essay on the ressurection of a space-age TV/radio set from Italy (PART I)
This time in the Attic I have an absolutely gorgeous Europhon Apollo Deluxe 4000 vintage radio/television set. This is an early 1970s Italian system embodying the marvellous 'space age' aesthetic of the time. My goal with this project is to restore and turn it into a composite monitor and AM radio receiver for the SOL-20 computer system whose restoration I covered in a previous post . As you may know, although the SOL-20 has no sound output, games have been created whose code induces oscillations in the circuitry, which then emit AM-modulated radiation (that is, deliberate radio interference). These emissions can then be picked up by an AM tuner close-by, so the games have sound effects. This worked surprisingly well, and thus a TV set with a built-in AM receiver is just perfect for the SOL-20. This set is also period-correct. This particular unit came from Sicily and its history is unknown to me. Unsurprisingly, though, the circuit boards were caked in with over five decades...
